Communication and consultation are important considerations at each step of the risk management process. Effective internal and external communication is imperative to ensure those responsible for implementing risk management understand the process and the basis on which decisions are made. The process of interaction with relevant stakeholders involves focusing on consultation and a consultative approach, essential to the application of risk management in helping to define the context appropriately; ensuring risks are identified holistically; bring different areas of expertise together in analysing risks; ensure different views are appropriately considered in evaluating risks; bring different views on risk treatment options; and finally allow the ‘ownership’ and appreciation of risks across a range of stakeholders and their perceptions of risks be identified, recorded and integrated into the decision making process.
