Air Force Base Selects Dedrone for Small UAS Threat Tracking and Defense Solution F.E. Warren Air Force Base

RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 28, 2019

AN FRANCISCO, Aug 27, 2019 – Dedrone, the leading provider in small UAS (sUAS) detection and tracking technology announced the continuation of their license agreement with F.E. Warren Air Force Base. F.E. Warren was selected to test the Dedrone platform in June of 2018 as part of a DIU testing phase that included six Department of Defense (DoD) facilities, and has been continuously testing, evaluating and using the capability for over a year.

F.E. Warren defends America with the world’s premier combat-ready Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) force. According to According to F.E. Warren, the Minuteman III missiles are deployed over a 9,600 square-mile area spanning Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado, and are on full alert 24-hours a day, 365 days a year.

Dedrone’s DroneTracker solution is a complete technology platform that collects and aggregates sUAS data and displays it in real-time. DroneTracker detects, classifies and tracks sUAS, and can be configured to automatically trigger alerts and countermeasures when a sUAS threat is confirmed.

F.E. Warren’s Solicitation Notice justified the need to continue licensing the Dedrone solution. “Without this system, F.E. Warren AFB will not have a reliable sUAS detection capability for specific areas of interest.” The statement continues, “DroneTracker is the only system which provides passive RF detection and immediate alerts to the appropriate parties. Loss of this detection capability will adversely affect the installation’s ability to defeat possibly hostile sUAS.”

Modern security requires a layered approach that keeps pace with the evolution of drone technology. “Unauthorized drone activity at military installation is a threat,” shares Phil Pitsky, VP of Federal Operations at Dedrone. “Drone detection technology is an essential tool for all military installations to allow Security Forces to assess airspace activity and develop standard procedures to respond appropriately to unauthorized drone incursions.”

Dedrone’s solution is deployed to customers around the world, including US and coalition militaries, correctional facilities, airports, utility companies and other public and private organizations. Dedrone has participated in multiple government sponsored rapid prototyping and testing events, including the DoD’s Black Dart, the Asymmetric Warfare Group’s DiDex, DHS’s TACTIC, USMC’s ANTX, the U.S. Air Force’s FCE, and USSOCOM’s ThunderDrone. At ThunderDrone, SOFWERX encouraged industry collaboration to address the entire sUAS Kill Chain, Team Dedrone was selected as the top cUAS solution out of an initial 93 participating vendors.

CHALLENGE

MILITARY BASES IN THE U.S. ARE FACING MORE FREQUENT INTERRUPTIONS AND THREATS FROM UNWANTED DRONES. A 56-DAY DRONE-DETECTION PILOT TEST DEMONSTRATION COMPLETED AT A BASE IN THE EASTERN U.S. REVEALED 95 INSTANCES OF PREVIOUSLY UNDETECTABLE UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS (UAS) ACTIVITY IN THE INSTALLATION’S IMMEDIATE VICINITY.

SOLUTION

AFTER AN INITIAL DEPLOYMENT AT A SINGLE SITE, MILITARY LEADERS RECOGNIZED THE VALUE OF THE DATA AND INSIGHT ON AIRSPACE ACTIVITY AND UNWANTED DRONES THAT THE DEDRONE SOLUTION PROVIDES. FROM THERE, THE DEPLOYMENT WAS EXPANDED TO COVER MORE BASES AND TO ADD LOCALIZATION TECHNOLOGY, WHICH HELPS SECURITY PERSONNEL UNDERSTAND THE SPECIFIC THREATS FROM DRONES DETECTED IN THEIR AIRSPACE.

RESULT

THE DEDRONE SOLUTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY DEPLOYED AT A NUMBER OF MILITARY BASES ACROSS THE U.S. AS THESE BASES HAVE CONTINUED TO COLLECT DATA ABOUT UNWANTED DRONES IN THEIR AIRSPACE, THEY’VE BEEN ABLE TO KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THEIR AIRSPACE AND BETTER PREPARE THEMSELVES TO PROTECT AGAINST THE THREAT.

Global Economic Forum 2019

RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 1, 2019

Challenge

The annual international business meeting in Davos, Switzerland, is a multi-faceted security challenge for the police in the Canton of Graubünden. More than 3,000 high-profile international politicians, scientists, economists, and global leaders converge for the week-long event, bringing with them different levels of security needs and risks, which the event organizers and police must accommodate.

Solution

The Canton police airspace security program began in 2017, and each year since then, security leaders continued to rely on Dedrone technology to monitor drone activity and protect attendees from airspace threats.

Dedrone partner Riedel Communications Switzerland AG was responsible for setting up and operating the drone detection system in 2019. Riedel installed an intelligent network of different Dedrone radio frequency sensors, including the RF-100 and RF-300, along with PTZ video cameras for the duration of the event. The Dedrone system monitored the airspace around the clock and was able to detect and locate any drone and track its flight path.

All information about invading drones was transmitted in real-time to the security forces, enabling them to identify and mitigate any threats. The Dedrone DroneTracker system continuously and automatically provided information about the manufacturer or the model of all drones detected and displayed the position and flight path of the drone. With this information, the police could target the flights and deploy authorized countermeasures if necessary. Security organizers had special permission to use active defeat technology in the event of an intrusion. Dedrone technology partner HP Wüst provided radio frequency jammers.

Result

Dedrone technology was running smoothly and protecting the airspace, granting security personnel the opportunity to focus their attention to other efforts, and respond only if there was a drone threat in the sky. The safety and security of all participants were of paramount importance, and the operations and security of the event was a success.

Technology Platform

The world’s most secure government agencies and organizations rely on automated, continuous protection of their lower airspace.

Modern security requires a layered approach that keeps up with the evolution of drone technology. Sensors connect to our DroneTracking Software, which detects, classifies, and protects against drone threats, including localizing the drone. Passive and active countermeasures can be triggered, tailoring the defense mechanism to the severity of the threat.

RF Sensors

Our RF Sensors are the cornerstone of airspace security, and detect commercial, consumer, and homebrew drones.  Drone Tracking software connects sensors, performs machine-learning analysis, and is the central nervous system for the complete solution.

Our Sensors and integrated external video cameras record forensic evidence of drone intrusions. A combination of forensic data is automatically captured by the Drone Tracking Software, including drone manufacturer, model, time and length of drone activity, and video verification. Summary reports are automatically produced and available on-demand for easy analysis of the most critical airspace security data.

Drone DNA

Drone technology advances rapidly, and only a software-centric solution can keep up. Drone Tracking software, hosted in the cloud or on- premise, uses our Drone DNA Database to recognize and classify RF, Wi-Fi, and non-Wi-Fi drones. Drone Tracking also integrates with 3rd- party sensors, and triggers alerts and countermeasures.

Drone DNA is a machine learning system and classification engine that recognizes drones of all kinds. Trained on millions of images and data points, it can distinguish between different drone models, and detect the difference between drones and other moving objects such as birds, planes, or other objects. Drone DNA signatures are continually updated via the cloud, enabling the Dedrone system to be always up to date to protect against the latest threats.
